Hiring remote talent from Eastern Europe: what to expect
Deep technical bench, strong written English, and a workable time overlap for US afternoons. Here's how to hire there well.

Eastern Europe remains the strongest region for engineering, QA, data, and technical support. Moldova, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine all have deep pools of people who have worked with Western clients for a decade.
The time zone reality
Most of the region sits 7–9 hours ahead of US Eastern. That leaves a genuine three-to-four hour overlap in the US morning. Plan for asynchronous work with one daily live window rather than a fully synchronous team.
What to screen for
- Spoken English fluency — written English is usually stronger than spoken
- Experience working directly with clients rather than through an agency layer
- Comfort with written handoffs and documentation
“Every applicant arrived already screened on video. My shortlist took twenty minutes instead of two weeks.”
Contracting and payment
Independent-contractor arrangements are standard and well understood locally. Most professionals invoice monthly and are registered for it. Keep a written agreement covering IP assignment and confidentiality.
